Free!
Developed especially for high school juniors and seniors interested in the performing arts and improving their writing and analytical skills, Young Critics is a free 10-session after school program held at BAM.
Guided by a master teacher, enrolled students will:
• Participate in writing workshops
• Attend 3 live performances at BAM
• Engage in lively discussions with peers
• Hone their critical writing skills
• Meet with professional critics and artists
(Former guests in Young Critics have included Ben Brantley of
The New York Times, playwright Tony Kushner (
Angels in America), and Joan Acocella of
The New Yorker.
This year's participants will attend and review performances of Shakespeare's
Macbeth, starring Patrick Stewart; Athol Fugard's classic play about Apartheid in South Africa,
Sizwe Banzi is Dead, starring original cast members John Kani and Winston Ntshona; and Samuel Beckett's
Endgame, starring John Turturro (
Barton Fink,
Do the Right Thing).
An anthology of the students’ writings is compiled at the end of the course. Essays included in this anthology make excellent writing samples for students applying to colleges.
Classes are held at BAM on Mondays, 4pm—6pm, March 10—May 19, 2008.
Young Critics is free to participating students.
