You’re invited to enjoy an afternoon of multi-genre, intergenerational artistry, curated by BAM Education’s alumni and teaching artists. This fun day of art and music for kids includes an instrument-making workshop, artist talk, and concerts by the Brown Rice Family and Mahiri Fainké & Baba Oludaré Bernard. Join us in celebrating the power of community, collective creation, and care through music, dance, and visual art!

Everyone’s a musician! Play and create instruments using recycled, reused, and repurposed objects with the support of two of BAM’s creative and talented Teaching Artists, Raka and Dhanté! Join in a parade and take your instruments to our 1pm concert and play for all to hear! -

Brown Rice Family is the band jamming towards global solidarity and organic happiness. It is a high-energy ensemble that combines an eclectic mix of musical influences encompassing reggae, hip-hop, dance-hall, Brazilian, Afro-beat, jazz styling, and Latin. With its members hailing from all over the world (Japan, Jamaica, Haiti, US, South Africa), Brown Rice Family draws on its diverse backgrounds to set the stage for their unique, colorful, rhythm-driven, and highly danceable sound. -

Six alumni participants from various BAM Education programs—Melanie Huerta, Omari Johnson, Elijah Ogbomo, Izzy Pierre, Said Ventura, and Alyssa Wheeler—return to curate and showcase their original visual works of art that center community, legacy, ancestry, and holding safer spaces for younger generations and those yet to come. Come and view their intentional pieces and engage with them as they converse about their work. -

Ages 12 & Up
Mahiri Fainke is a young Malian/Senegalese-American artist, a West African traditional and diasporic folklorist from Philadelphia studying art, history, and culture for the past 18 years. As a keeper of tradition—a djeli/griot—Mahiri works to bring the culture to our youth and community, to pass it forward and keep their traditions alive, while also providing to the larger communities to instill joy and healing.
Baba Oludaré Bernard (Kìire Wellness Family) is a renaissance artist from Brownsville/Bed-Stuy Brooklyn, the founder of Kìire Wellness Center for African Diaspora + Wellness Arts, the author of Breathing with Orisha, an ordained Olorisha, and a certified breathwork facilitator with the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance. His work is dedicated to breath, Orisha, and African Spirituality—tools we all need to survive our changing times.
