In Jean-Luc Godard’s controversial follow-up to his landmark Nouvelle Vague classic Breathless, Michel Subor plays Bruno, an apolitical Frenchman who has deserted his post in the Algerian War. Hiding out in Geneva, Bruno meets Veronica (Anna Karina, making her screen debut), a captivating woman with a mysterious connection to the revolution. Filmed in 1960, Godard’s espionage drama was promptly banned at home due to its critical stance against French colonialism in Algeria before finally premiering in 1963, its indignant power undiminished.
