In Claire Denis’ stunning and deeply personal debut feature, the eight-year-old daughter of a French bureaucrat gradually awakens to the racial, social, and sexual tensions that surround her in 1950s Cameroon.

Kumi (Kumiko Ota) is a drug-dealing dropout living a bohemian life on the outskirts of Tokyo. One drunken night, she stumbles upon an abandoned industrial site full of flourishing greenery. Seeking to escape the rough-and-tumble of the city, Kumi decides to sell her belongings and reside there permanently, transforming it into an oasis for fellow nonconformists. In this underappreciated masterpiece of the No Wave film movement, Masashi Yamamoto crafts an anticapitalist rejoinder to the “economic bubble” culture of the 1980s and a mesmeric visual experience in collaboration with his cinematographer, the future director Tom DiCillo.
