Spike Lee gets semi-autobiographical in this singular 1994 film about family life in 1973 Bed-Stuy, depicting hopes, conflicts, and losses in a close-knit neighborhood populated by memorable characters.
Aaron Loves Angela
For 16-year-old Aaron (Hooks), all that really matters in life is playing basketball—until he meets and falls in love with Angela (Cara), a 15-year-old Puerto Rican girl in Harlem. Knowing it would result in violent objections, Aaron and Angela keep their romance a secret from their parents, meeting in a room they’ve furnished in a deserted tenement building. But their idyllic romance is interrupted when drug dealers invade the building. Filmmaker Gordon Parks Jr. (Super Fly) puts a modern urban spin on Romeo and Juliet in this 1975 drama.
