An award-winning documentary made secretly by a collective of Haitian and American filmmakers, Bitter Cane provides deep insights into foreign exploitation in Haiti that remain all too relevant today.

- BAM Film 2024
Nadira, an elderly Palestinian, has been a refugee since the age of 12. Now, she has to leave Damascus, too. She and her daughter, Mona, feared for their lives in Syria, but the idea of a safe existence elsewhere is still a distant dream. Filmmaker Khaled Jarrar receives unsettling videos and voice messages as they cross to the Greek island of Lesbos and joins them there, on the long road to a better life, experiencing firsthand what it means to be a refugee in this stunningly visceral exploration of displacement.
Join us for a Q&A with director Khaled Jarrar moderated by Yasmina Tawil, Director of Film Programming at Arab Film and Media Institute, following the screening.
Notes on Displacement is distributed by Cinema Politica.
