Featuring Robert Williams and Nathan Lane at their comedic best, The Birdcage centers on a gay couple, Armand and Albert Goldman, who pass for a conservative straight couple in order to win the approval of their son’s future in-laws (Hackman and Wiest). Gender roles, family dynamics, and cultural norms are brilliantly skewered in Mike Nichols’ and screenwriter Elaine May’s Americanized adaptation of the 1973 French film La Cage aux Folles.
