Almayer's Folly

In Chantal Akerman’s corrective adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s first novel, updated in setting to the 50s, the daughter of a Malaysian mother and Belgian father picks an uneasy path to liberation from a home disintegrating under the weight of colonial rot, her prospecting father’s tropical dream fallen into swampy, nightmarish ruin. Akerman has described the film as her liberation from her fear of pent-up anger, finally allowed to flow freely in this fearless reckoning with the mustiest corners of human nature and Western greed.
