In an Armenian monastery, multiple tomes, mysteriously drenched, surround the child poet Sayat Nova. The books’ pages flapping and drying on the roof provide one of many memorable tableaux images in Parajanov’s sumptuous, kaleidoscopic 1969 Soviet-Armenian film—considered by many one of the greatest ever made—in which metaphors for reading, writing, and image-making interweave with scenes of cloth-making, feasting, and ritual.
