Charles Burnett’s long-lost 1999 feature, unreleased until 2024 and screening at BAM in a new 4K restoration from Milestone Films, is hilarious, heartfelt, and timely.
Alfreda’s Cinema presents On Becoming a Guinea Fowl Advance Screening
- Part of
- BAM Film 2025
Alfreda's Cinema and BAM, with Be Reel Black Cinema Club and A24, are thrilled to present an advance screening of On Becoming A Guinea Fowl, an evocative, surreal exploration by Rungano Nyoni. The film marks a significant moment for Nyoni, awarded Best Director at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and for contemporary African cinema.
On an empty road in the middle of the night, a young woman stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family to light. Haunting and vibrant at its core, Nyoni’s film explores the lies we tell ourselves and each other, examining how personal and collective histories, wrapped in silence, shape how we confront and understand grief, identity, and truth.
This exclusive early screening invites viewers to dive into a rich and layered narrative that speaks to the complexities of family, identity, and societal expectations in Zambia. We invite our Brooklyn audience to immerse themselves in the world of On Becoming A Guinea Fowl, a film that asks us all to reckon with the fiction we live by—and ultimately, with who we are.
