Prolific British cinema vet and B-film auteur Ken Hughes (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Trials of Oscar Wilde) takes on one of Shakespeare’s greatest criminals, situating him in the American gangster world of the 1930s via a clever script by American screenwriter Philip Yordan. Though set in the US, this very faithful adaptation was shot in England, with stylish black-and-white cinematography by Basil Emmott and crackling performances by Paul Douglas in the title role and Ruth Roman as his ruthless wife, Lily.
