Ernest Cole: Lost and Found

- BAM Film 2025
Featuring LaKeith Stanfield as the voice of Ernest Cole
This new documentary by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) chronicles the life and work of Ernest Cole, one of the first Black freelance photographers in South Africa. His early pictures, shocking when they were first published, revealed to the world Black life under apartheid. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and lived in exile in the US, photographing extensively in New York City and the American South. House of Bondage, his landmark book of photographs denouncing apartheid, cemented his place at age 27 as one of the great photographers of his time. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found tells Cole’s story through his own writings, recollections of those closest to him, and the lens of his uncompromising work, reintroducing a pivotal Black artist to a new generation.
