- Part of
- Sudanese Cinema and
- BAM Film 2025
Directed by Gadalla Gubara (1977)
Sudanese cameraman, film producer, director and photographer Gadalla Gubara, a pioneering African filmmaker, considered his first narrative feature film, Tajouj, to be his greatest achievement. Shot in one of the most remote regions of the country, the film details both a budding romance thwarted by custom and, on a larger scale, the tense relationship between tradition and modernity. Tajouj won Egypt's highest film award, the Nefertiti Statue, at the Cairo International Film Festival in 1982, and was celebrated at film festivals in Alexandria, Tehran, Berlin, Moscow, and Cannes, among numerous others.
