Bette Davis’ career had long been in decline prior to her Oscar nomination for this nightmarishly psychotic melodrama / black comedy about two aging sisters and Hollywood has-beens (Davis and Crawford) rotting in a decaying mansion. The most corrosive indictment of tinseltown this side of Sunset Boulevard, Aldrich’s entertaining picture is legendary for the behind-the-scenes vitriol between Davis and Crawford and how it played out on-screen.
