Edward Yang’s penultimate film is an acerbic, sprawling tragicomedy and a poisoned love letter to Taipei as a rising cosmopolis of big money, big dreams, and big cons.

Before Vertigo, Psycho, Rear Window, and The Birds, there was Alfred Hitchcock’s “first indisputable masterpiece” (Chicago Reader), 1942’s Shadow of a Doubt. With a script by illustrious playwright Thornton Wilder (Our Town), author Sally Benson (Meet Me in St. Louis), and Hitchcock’s wife and frequent collaborator Alma Reville (Suspicion, The Lady Vanishes), this thriller follows a bored California teenager who discovers something very sinister about her Uncle Charlie when he comes to stay. Renowned for its technically difficult night-effect longshots, this newly-restored 4K version screens in the Harvey for one night only.
