Versatile screen icon Peter Lorre portrays Janos Szabo, a kindly Hungarian watchmaker who turns to crime after being horribly scarred in a hotel fire on the day of he arrived in America.
Gertrud
In the last film made by Danish director and screenwriter Carl Theodor Dreyer (The Passion of Joan of Arc, Ordet), a former opera singer leaves an unfulfilling marriage in search of ideal love, but neither a passionate affair nor an older relationship rekindled provides what she seeks. When it was released in 1964, Gertrud divided critics and audiences, yet no less an authority than Jean-Luc Godard rated the film number one in his list of the best films of the year. Featuring a sublime performance by Nina Pens Rode in the title role, the film neatly crowns Dreyer’s distinguished career.
