In the last film made by Danish director and screenwriter Carl Theodor Dreyer, a woman leaves an unfulfilling marriage in search of ideal love, refusing to compromise her ideals.
The Face Behind the Mask
Versatile screen icon Peter Lorre (M, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca) portrays Janos Szabo, a kindly Hungarian watchmaker who comes to America in search of a new life. Horribly scarred in a hotel fire on the day of his arrival, Szabo is unable to find employment, and turns to crime to support himself. Written specifically for Lorre and directed by Robert Florey (The Cocoanuts, Murders in the Rue Morgue), The Face Behind the Mask was poorly received at release, but earned a solid reputation for its premise and performances.
