The first film adaptation of Fannie Hurst’s 1933 best-selling novel, Imitation of Life explores the friendship between two struggling single mothers: Bea Pullman (Colbert), a working-class white woman who ascends to the top of the business world, and Delilah Johnson (Beavers), her Black housekeeper and chef, whose life is shattered by the rejection of her rebellious, white-passing daughter Peola (Washington).
