Derived from Robert Altman’s dreams—literally—this psychological drama stars Spacek as a nurse in a small California desert town who becomes enamored with her pseudo-cosmopolitan coworker (Duvall).
Popeye
Robert Altman brought his characteristically offbeat sensibility to this live-action take on the iconic comic strip, featuring spot-on performances by Robin Williams as the brawny sailorman and Shelley Duval seemingly born for the role of his lithe lady love, Olive Oyl, as well as seamlessly integrated songs by Harry Nilsson. Though its kooky brilliance went largely unappreciated at the time, it’s far from a blight on the esteemed director’s filmography; it’s now quintessential Altman.
