La Valse De Médias (1987)
Dir. Luc Moullet
27min; digital
In French with English subtitles
The always-joking-but-not-joking Luc Moullet glances at the French public library system at a crucial juncture in the mid-80s—a time when libraries in many places were opening up to new technologies, multiple media, and a wider public.
--
Party Girl (1995) Dir. Daisy von Scherler Mayer.
94min; DCP
With Parker Posey, Guillermo Díaz, Liev Schreiber, Omar Townsend, Anthony De Sando, Sasha von Scherler, Donna Mitchell, Simon Verhoeven, Nicole Bobbitt.
Parker Posey is Mary, the titular party girl, bailed out of jail by her exasperated librarian godmother (played by Sasha von Scherler, the director's own mother) for throwing illegal raves in this 90s cult-classic that catapulted Posey to icon status. As punishment, Mary does time as a clerk at the New York Public library where the indefatigable wild child winningly transfers her club beats and dance moves to the loans desk, book stacks, and Dewey Decimal System—though not without a few hiccups along the way. Nineties fashion, downtown club culture, and the municipal library system make for the ultimate party mix in Daisy von Scherler Mayer’s effervescent and endlessly quotable comedy.
