Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists
Written and directed by Tiago Rodrigues
The illustrious playwright and director Tiago Rodrigues, Artistic Director of the Festival d’Avignon, returns to BAM after 2021’s joyous By Heart with a courageous, compelling work with a jaw-dropping premise.
For over 70 years, a singular Portuguese family has gathered at their country house for an annual ritual: the execution of a fascist. All the women in this family share the same name - Catarina - and they've passed this tradition down through generations. Now, the youngest Catarina questions their practice, igniting a family conflict that raises urgent questions: Should democratic principles be compromised to protect democracy itself? What role does violence play in creating a more just society?
Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists explores these tensions with poetic grace, offering a compassionate look at the sacrifices made in pursuit of a better world.
In Portuguese with English supertitles.
Please note: Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists includes strong language, violence, and loud sound effects.
This production is recommended for audiences age 17 and older.
